IV Ketamine Assisted Pain (KAP) Protocol — Chronic Pain + Neuropathic Conditions

At Áureo Clinic, we provide an evidence-informed approach to IV ketamine therapy for people living with chronic pain, including complex neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, CRPS, and other pain syndromes that have not responded fully to standard care. Our IV Ketamine Assisted Pain (KAP) Protocol is designed to maximize therapeutic benefit safely and compassionately.

Chronic pain can be persistent, disabling, and deeply disruptive to quality of life. When conventional medications, physical therapy, interventional procedures, and behavioral approaches have not provided sufficient relief, ketamine infusions may offer an alternative path toward meaningful improvement, supported by clinical research and real-world practice. (MedCentral)

What is IV Ketamine Assisted Pain (KAP)?

Intravenous ketamine delivered at moderate doses (i.e., doses that do not induce loss of consciousness) can modulate pain pathways via NMDA receptor antagonism. This can help “reset” central pain signaling and reduce the intensity of pain experiences. Ketamine has been studied as an off-label treatment for refractory chronic pain, with evidence suggesting longer and more frequent infusions may correlate with longer relief. (MedCentral)

In contrast to our standard mental-health ketamine infusions, the chronic pain protocol is structured as a series of consecutive IV sessions to build cumulative analgesic benefit.

Áureo’s 4–5 Day IV Pain Reset Protocol

Who it’s for

This protocol is designed for individuals experiencing persistent pain (≥6+ months) that has not sufficiently responded to standard therapies, including:

  • Neuropathic pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

  • Peripheral neuropathy

  • Migraine-related pain

  • Other chronic pain syndromes

Protocol Structure

4–5 consecutive IV ketamine infusion sessions

Each session includes:

  • IV ketamine infusion administered over a structured period

  • Vital signs and clinical monitoring throughout treatment

  • Optional supportive care medications (e.g., anti-nausea agents)

  • Clinical assessment before and after each infusion

Typical Schedule:

  • Day 1–5 (or Day 1–4): Consecutive infusions scheduled daily

  • Sessions are spaced close together to maximize cumulative effect

  • Total infusions may be adjusted based on individual response and tolerability

What to Expect During the Protocol

During each infusion, ketamine is administered intravenously in a medically supervised setting. Patients may feel changes in perception or mild dissociation, which are common and monitored throughout the session. You will be observed closely for safety and comfort. A typical infusion is longer than a standard 40–60-minute mental health ketamine session to tailor to pain modulation goals. (MedCentral)

We emphasize safety first — your comfort, understanding of the process, and physiologic monitoring come first.

Why Consecutive Sessions?

Research and clinical experience suggest that multiple consecutive ketamine infusions may lead to more durable improvements in pain interference, function, and pain-related distress than single isolated treatments. One recent real-world chronic pain study delivered five days of low-dose infusions (e.g., 0.5 mg/kg over ~40 minutes daily) and found statistically significant improvements in pain interference and other quality-of-life measures that were maintained at three and six months follow-up. (Cleveland Clinic)

While individual responses vary, many patients report:

  • Reduced daily pain intensity

  • Improved sleep and activity tolerance

  • Greater overall quality of life

  • Reduction in emotional distress tied to pain

Who is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have chronic pain not well controlled with other therapies

  • Are open to an IV infusion series with active monitoring

  • Have completed a medical intake to confirm suitability

An initial comprehensive intake appointment is required to evaluate your medical history, medications, and treatment goals. This ensures ketamine therapy is appropriate and safe for your individual needs and health profile. (Áureo)

Safety and Monitoring

Ketamine at subanesthetic doses is generally well-tolerated, but we emphasize:

  • Continuous vital sign monitoring

  • Comfortable and supportive infusion suite

  • Immediate clinical response to any adverse symptoms

Patients are generally asked to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for 12 hours post-treatment. (Áureo)

Follow-Up and Maintenance

After completing the 4–5 session KAP Protocol, your provider will reassess your response and may recommend:

  • Maintenance infusions spaced over weeks to months

  • Adjunctive therapies (physical therapy, pain psychology, lifestyle support)

This individualized approach helps sustain improvements and supports long-term pain management.
